Just like a real snowflake - no two are alike. Hand painted by one of our volunteers on roofing slate salvaged from the League-Kempner House, this festive ornament measures approximately 3.5" x 3" and comes with a silver cord for hanging.
History Behind the Slate:
During the 1900 Hurricane, Galveston's citizens made an unwelcome discovery: some of the most deadly elements came not from nature, but from their own buildings. Pieces of roof slate had come loose during the Category 4 storm, transforming into deadly projectiles in the intense winds. This unfortunate fact led to a ban on new slate roofing after the storm. We were lucky enough to discover this slate on the grounds of the League-Kempner House, discarded after its eventual removal from the roof.
